World Tunnel Congress 2019 - Naples - CONGRESS REPORT
The conference was held in Naples from May 3 to May 9 and offered the traditional topics on design and construction of underground works, focusing on tunnelling, engineering and innovation. In addition, combined with some unusual topics suggested by the Neapolitans, which are true Italian trademarks, such as history (Archaeology), design (Architecture) and genius & creativity (Art).
We hade more than 170 podium presentations with lectures from more than 36 nations. Logically there was a large number (30%) of homefield-presentations (from Italy). The decision to organise the congress this year in Naples was driven by the fact Italy is the first nation in Europe, for total length of road and railway tunnels. Currently, we are talking about over 2,100 kilometers. Italy is second in the world only to China.
The 2019 World Tunnel Congress, with over 2000 delegates and a lot of young engineers, confirm the growing attention to underground infrastructures sector.
At the last day of the congress the general assembly of the ITA was held. Mrs Jinxiu Yan has been elected as the new President of the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association. The next WTC will be organized in 2020 in Kuala Lumpur. Next stops for this international event will be Copenhagen (2021) & Cancun (2021).
