On December 9, 2025, ABTUS-BVOTS organized an exclusive jobsite visit to the Scheldt Tunnel on the Left Bank in Antwerp. Fifty participants—a mix of asset managers, contractors, suppliers, and engineering consultants—were given a unique insight into one of the most challenging infrastructure projects in our region.
The morning began with a project briefing by Jan Tack (Contract Manager COTU TM), who walked us through the entire progress of the project to date. His presentation provided valuable insights into the approach and complexity of this megaproject.
This was followed by a masterclass on immersed tunnels by Peter Van Westendorp (Immontec). The session was a true deep dive into the world of immersed tunnels: technical, substantive, and highly engaging. Even for experienced tunnel builders, it offered a refreshing perspective on the challenges Immontec faced on this site. A frequently heard remark: “The Dutch, water engineers… what expertise!”
The highlight was the guided tour of the site, led by Jan Tack and Jeffrey De Pauw (COTU TM). We visited the entrance ramps and had the opportunity to reach the bulkhead of element 1, where we could see in detail the connection between the two elements. A unique opportunity that is rarely offered.
A fantastic morning that leaves us wanting more. In 2026, we hope to organize a follow-up visit to the Fehmarn Link Connection. More information will follow soon!
Many thanks again to Jan Tack & Jeffrey De Pauw for their hospitality, to Peter Van Westendorp for sharing his expertise and off course to the owner Lantis for the access on the jobsite.
