INVITATION - CALL FOR PAPERS - 3rd World Tunnel Day

Call for papers for “sustainability day” – deadline 20th of November 2024


We are looking forward to receiving interesting papers regarding the topic “sustainability in underground solutions”. Please submit a two-page paper in English by 1st of November 2024 using the template on the link below.

The two-page paper can present products, projects, research, experiences, etc…The language is English. The papers will be evaluated and reviewed by the scientific committee of the seminar, which will lead to an acceptance or rejection. When accepted, in due time, you are asked to prepare either a presentation or a poster on A1 format, together with a short pitch presentation. The paper itself – if accepted - will be part of the proceedings which will be made available for all attendees.


Contributions can be submitted in the following 4 themes:

1. Sustainable Underground Architecture

Design principles for sustainable underground spaces: Incorporating natural light, ventilation, and thermal insulation to minimize energy consumption. Integration with surrounding environment: Considering the impact of underground structures on above-ground ecosystems and minimizing disturbance. Materials and construction techniques: Using sustainable materials and construction methods that reduce environmental impact and promote long-term durability. Life cycle assessment: Evaluating the environmental impact of underground structures throughout their entire life cycle, from construction to maintenance and decommissioning

2. Energy Efficiency and

Sustainability in

Underground

Infrastructure

Energy consumption in underground spaces (lighting, ventilation, etc.) Innovative energy-saving technologies (e.g., renewable energy sources, smart grids) Case studies of sustainable energy practices in underground structures Role of asset managers in promoting energy efficiency

3. Sustainable Materials and

Construction Practices for

Underground Structures

Use of sustainable materials (e.g., recycled materials, bio-based materials) Sustainable construction methods (e.g., green building standards, circular economy principles) Long-term durability and maintenance of sustainable underground structures Asset managers' role in promoting sustainable construction practices

4. Climate Change Adaptation

and Resilience of

Underground

Infrastructure

Impacts of climate change on underground structures (e.g., flooding, extreme temperatures) Adaptation strategies to enhance resilience (e.g., flood protection, heat island mitigation) Risk assessment and management for underground assets The role of asset managers in ensuring the long-term viability of underground infrastructure in a changing climate
