Ahead of its official reopening on 28 February 2026, ABTUS‑BVOTS is pleased to offer its members a unique opportunity to visit the Waaslandtunnel in a completely traffic‑free condition. Thanks to the collaboration with AWV and the Flemish Government – Department of Mobility & Public Works, this technical site visit provides an exceptional behind‑the‑scenes look at one of Belgium’s most iconic pieces of infrastructure.
PPE is mandatory: helmet, safety shoes, fluorescent vest and goggles.
Please bring your own equipment.
The Waaslandtunnel, popularly known as the “Konijnenpijp”, is the oldest vehicular tunnel under the River Scheldt, connecting Antwerp’s right bank with Linkeroever. It was officially inaugurated on 10 September 1933. Construction began in 1931, executed by the Compagnie Internationale des Pieux Armés Frankignoul.
The tunnel’s total length is 2,110.85 meters, consisting of concrete entrance sections on both banks and a central girded iron section beneath the riverbed. Much of the excavation passed through water‑rich sand layers, with only a portion crossing a dense clay stratum under the Scheldt—an impressive engineering challenge at the time.
Now, nearly a century after its commissioning, the tunnel is undergoing a major renovation. This includes a complete renewal of the ventilation system—work that has proven complex due to the 1930s construction techniques still present in the structure.
This site visit offers an exceptional, one‑time chance to walk through the fully upgraded tunnel shortly before it reopens to the public.
