NEWS FROM OUR MEMBERS - Promat & GTA Group contribute to Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link

The ink has dried on the largest tunnel contract in Promat & GTA Group's history (both ABTUS-BVOTS-members): the Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link linking Denmark and Germany.

This project is full of superlatives – at 18 kilometers it is the largest immersed tunnel in the world, it is currently Denmark’s largest infrastructure project, and is a “green corridor” supporting Europe’s future sustainable transport network – and Promat & GTA are playing a crucial role, protecting the tunnels against fire with calcium silicate fire protection boards and our their expertise in tunnel fire protection.

Focus on performance and sustainability

The Fehmarn belt tunnel has been designed to withstand a fire at a temperature of at least 1350 degrees Celsius for three hours. Promat initiated a series of tests – both internally and external tests – to meet the fire performance and the durability requirements of this tunnel. Not only the tests supported this, als their expertise was on display when the contractors – Femern Link Contractors (FLC), including Deme Group and Wayss & Freytag (both also ABTUS-BVOTS members), – visited Tisselt and the fire lab.

FLC also considered the Etex and Promat sustainability agendas as important factors for the project. Not only did Promat demonstrate sustainability credentials – including EcoVadis, commitment to SBTi, portfolio roadmaps and a proven track record in tunnel projects – they also organized for the waste generated on site to be recycled in Denmark. Co-funded by the European Union, the project has a strong sustainability focus that required collaboration from across Etex to support the tunnel team and ensure Promat’s selection for this project.

What Promat delivers

This is a project that truly embodies Promat's purpose: advancing expertise to build a safe and sustainable world. It is not just the products they bring to the table; Promat is delivering expertise in fire testing, site audit, engineering support and fixing details for this project, along with management of the waste created at the jobsite.

This is a partnership between FLC and Promat (Etex Group) that will continue over many years, underscoring the strong reputation on safety, sustainability and the deep expertise of their organisation.

What GTA performs

GTA Group is in charge of design studies, specific methodologies of work, and installation of passive fire protection over the surface of 79 standard tunnel elements of the Fehmarn Belt Tunnel. Working closely with Promat, we ensure the precise application of fire protection boards, meeting the project’s strict fire resistance requirement of 1,350°C for three hours. Our expertise guarantees durability and compliance with safety standards through advanced installation techniques, rigorous quality control, and seamless integration with the overall construction process. By executing this critical phase with precision, GTA Group contributes to the long-term safety and sustainability of one of Europe’s most ambitious infrastructure projects.
